The church of St. Johann Baptist in Neu-Ulm was built as a garrison church in 1857. Today it is the Catholic parish church of the parish of St. Johann Baptist in the city center and the Schwaighofen district.

architecture

Changes

The church, also known as the War Memorial Church in the 1930s , was expanded by Dominikus Böhm from 1922 to 1926 and after the Second World War , and its architecture was redesigned to its present form. The last extensive restoration from 1980 to 1985 gave the interior of the church its current appearance. According to experts, St. Johann Baptist is one of the most important church buildings of the 20th century in an Expressionist style.

Building description

The outer walls and the tower are made of material from the demolished Ulm fortifications (Jurassic limestone, bricks and remains of beaver tail). Inside, the contrast between the hollow brick floor and the white walls bathed in light and idiosyncratic vaults create a striking spatial creation, especially in the baptistery. The formless reinforced concrete used in the vault construction is of technical interest. The vaults were, so to speak, mapped out by the construction iron; A wide-meshed iron mesh was attached to the underside of these, and a brick fabric ( Rabitz ) was used as a plaster base. Finally, the concrete was introduced and distributed from above. The plaster was applied from the interior.
