Hans Bühlmann

Hans Bühlmann (born January 30, 1930 in Chur ) is a Swiss actuary.

Bühlmann studied mathematics at the ETH Zurich with a diploma in 1955 and a doctorate with Walter Saxer in 1959 (dissertation: Interchangeable stochastic variables and their limit theorems ). From 1958 to 1961 he was an actuary at Swiss Re and from 1961 to 1963 Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley . He then returned to Swiss Re before becoming a professor at ETH Zurich in 1966. In 1986/87 he was dean of his faculty, from 1987 to 1990 he was president of the ETH Zurich and in 1997 he retired.

He was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley (several times, most recently in 1986), the University of Michigan , the University of Manitoba , the Free University of Brussels , the University of Tokyo , Georgia State University (Thomas Bowles Chair), the La Sapienza University in Rome and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.

He holds honorary doctorates from the University of London , the University of Amsterdam , Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, La Sapienza University and the University of Waterloo . Bühlmann is a member of the Insurance Hall of Fame of the International Insurance Society in New York and received the Presidential Award from the Society of Actuaries in 2002. He is Honorary President of the Swiss Association of Actuaries .
