Hans Baur (pastor)

Hans Baur (born August 17, 1870 in Zurich ; † November 30, 1937 Basel ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor .

Life

Hans Baur was born the son of the Zurich teacher and musician Johann Jakob Baur. After attending grammar school in Zurich, he studied Protestant theology in Zurich , Göttingen , Berlin and Zurich again from the winter semester of 1889 . In 1893 he joined the Corps Tigurinia Zurich .

After ordination in 1894, he was second pastor in Uster from 1899 to 1903 . In Basel he was parish priest in St.-Matthäus from 1903 to 1911 and in St.-Leonhard from 1911 to 1937. In 1901 he married Hedwig Hämmig.

Hans Baur was a leading figure in theological liberalism. From 1906 he was co-editor and later also editor of the Basel magazine "Schweizerisches Protestantenblatt". He was committed to the Swiss East Asia Mission and to Albert Schweitzer's Mission Hospital , with whom he had a friendly relationship. In 1933, in connection with Germany, he praised the social intentions of National Socialism and Hitler's demand for an internal unification of Germany against Bolshevism .

Awards

  • In 1923, Hans Baur was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology (D. theol. Hc) by the University of Breslau for his services to the internees during the First World War.
