As city director of Hilchenbach, he was responsible, among other things, for the establishment of the Upper Ferndorftal wastewater association, and he also provided the decisive impetus for strengthening Hilchenbach's tourism location. He also campaigned for a better use of the Wilhelmsburg ; today the city archive, the city library and the city museum are housed there.

Mahrenholz can also be seen next to many other well-known Hilchenbach personalities on the watercolor "Marktplatz Hilchenbach". The picture, which the former art teacher at the Jung-Stilling-Gymnasium and Hilchenbach painter Lothar Grisebach created in 1984/1985, has been exhibited with a short interruption in the council chamber of the city of Hilchenbach since 2017 and moved into the public eye during the so-called "picture dispute" .
