Hans Christian Jacobaeus

Hans Christian Jacobaeus (born May 29, 1879 in Skarhult , Malmöhus län ; † October 29, 1937 ) was a Swedish internist . In 1916 he became a professor at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm . From 1925 until his death in 1937 he was a member of the Nobel Prize Committee.

Jacobaeus was an important figure in modern laparoscopy and thoracoscopy . In 1910 he performed the first thoracoscopy with a cystoscope . The technique has been used in the treatment of patients with tuberculosis and adhesions in the thorax. In 1911 he published the work “On the possibility of using cystoscopy to examine serous cavities” in the Münchner Medizinisches Wochenschrift.

He also pioneered the cystoscopic examination of the abdominal cavity (laparoscopy). He understood the possibilities, but also the limits of this discipline. He also campaigned for endoscopic training for medical personnel. He also saw the need for specialized instruments for laparoscopy to enable optimal use.

As early as 1901 Georg Kelling (1866–1945) carried out examinations of the abdominal cavity with a cystoscope in Dresden , but on dogs. However, Kelling claimed to have also performed the first two successful laparoscopic examinations in humans. However, he had failed to publish this promptly.

Hans Christian Jacobaeus was the father of Christian Jacobaeus , an electrical engineer.
