Career

Coenen started playing football at Oberbrucher BC 09 and switched to Alemannia Aachen at the age of 19 . From 1950 to 1959 he played 213 point games in the Oberliga West , in one of five seasons as the highest German division, in which he scored seven goals.

He and his team would almost have been relegated to the 2nd Oberliga West if his team hadn't won the decider for 14th place against Borussia M.gladbach 5-0 and the subsequent relegation to Oberliga West hadn't been successfully completed. So he stayed until the end of his career in the league, in which the best placement was achieved with 3rd place in the seasons 1951/52 , 1955/56 and 1957/58 .

During his club membership, he played nine games in the DFB Cup competition, in which he made his debut on August 17, 1952 in Herzogenrath in a 5-2 first-round victory over TuS Essen-West . He played the other four matches in this competition and reached the final on May 1, 1953. In the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf , in front of 37,000 spectators, Rot-Weiss Essen won 2-1; the connecting goal by Jupp Derwall in the 56th minute was the only goal his team managed. 1954/55 he was used again in three games in this competition before his team was eliminated on November 27, 1954 in the quarterfinals with 0-2 against Altona 93 from this.

In 1959 he returned to Upper Brucher BC 09 back and was in the course of his career still in Ratheim as player-coach at the resident SpV Ratheim active, as well as a youth coach at SC Myhl , a Stadtteilverein of Wassenberg in Heinsberg district , the head coach of the first team he 1982 until 1985 was.
