Hans Erdmann (film composer)
Hans Erdmann Thimotheos Guckel (born November 7, 1882 in Breslau , † November 21, 1942 in Berlin ) was a German film music composer and music journalist. Hans Erdmann was his artist u. Author name.
Life
He studied violin, music theory and composition in Breslau. With a thesis on the history of Catholic church music in Silesia, he finished his studies in 1912 and received his doctorate. phil. He worked as concertmaster at the Wroclaw Theater , where he performed Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in his own adaptation in 1913 . After the First World War, in which he served as a soldier, he worked at the Riga City Theater and the Jena City Theater . As director of the Kammerspiele, he performed his own composition The Dancer there. Engagements in Potsdam and Brandenburg followed.
At the beginning of the 1920s, Erdmann began to write film music , a. a. 1921/22 the original music for Murnau's Nosferatu , which he conducted for the premiere on March 4, 1922. He worked closely with the director of the UFA orchestra and film music department (Decla Bioskop) Giuseppe Becce . From 1924 Erdmann wrote as a music editor for the Reichsfilmblatt and the magazine Filmtechnik . In 1926 he switched to the magazine Film - Ton - Kunst , which dealt with the theory and practice of silent film accompanying music. In 1928 Erdmann headed the Academy for Film Music at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin, where he trained young film music composers. This made him the most important theoretician of silent film music in the twenties. Together with Giuseppe Becce and Ludwig Brav , Erdmann wrote the Allgemeine Handbuch der Film-Musik in 1927 , a standard work for silent film cinema music .
