Ernst Hans Fährmann (born December 17, 1860 in Lommatzsch , † June 29, 1940 in Dresden ) was a German composer and organist .

Life

Fährmann was the son of a school teacher and cantor , received his first piano lessons from his father at the age of five and began to play the organ at the age of twelve . From 1874 to 1880 he attended the teacher training institute in Friedrichstadt and worked as a teaching assistant in Pieschen until 1882 before he decided to pursue a musical career. In the years up to 1890 he received private lessons from Hermann Scholz (piano), Carl August Fischer (organ) and Jean Louis Nicodé ( music theory and composition) and gradually gained a good reputation as an organist and pianist through concert appearances. In 1889 Fährmann married the Swiss singer Julie Bächi. In 1890 he was appointed organist and cantor at the Johanneskirche in Dresden , which he remained until 1926. In addition, he worked as an organ teacher at the Dresden Conservatory from 1892 . In 1913 he was appointed Royal Music Director and in 1917 Professor. In 1939 he retired.

Hans Fährmann composed primarily organ works, among which 14 organ sonatas, some of which are very large, stand out. In addition, songs, choral works, the two oratorios Heimkehr and Auf Bethlehems Fluren , chamber music and three concertos for organ and orchestra were created from his pen . His tonal language is committed to late romanticism .

At the turn of the century, Fährmann was one of the most respected German organ composers, whose best works were put on a par with those of Max Reger . The spread of his music was seriously disturbed by the destruction of the Otto Junne publishing house in Leipzig , where most of Fährmann's compositions had been published, by bombing raids in 1943. After the Second World War , the composer's symphonic and splendidly sounding music had exactly the opposite ideals of the organ movement across from. Thus Fährmann was soon forgotten and was only gradually rediscovered in the course of the re-evaluation of late romantic organ music at the end of the 20th century.
