Hans Gekeler

Hans Gekeler (born January 7, 1930 in Ulm ; † May 4, 2010 ) was a German painter , graphic designer , color theorist and university professor.

Life

After graduating from high school, Hans Gekeler completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter. He then studied painting and graphic design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He turned to concrete painting in the 1950s .

During his studies he taught at the graphic arts college in Stuttgart, where he became a lecturer in 1954. At the same time he was a freelance graphic designer and painter.

From 1967 to 1968 he ran the Behr gallery in Stuttgart with Anton Stankowski and Günther Wirth. From 1969 to 1973 he was gallery manager for “Interior” at Behr + Döhler in Frankfurt am Main . In 1967 he started teaching at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences , which was then still called the Darmstadt Werkkunstschule . He taught graphic design and color theory and was appointed professor in 1973. From 1979 to 1985 he was dean of the design department and retired in 1992. During all these years he was a visiting professor at universities in the USA.

Gekeler's main focus was on the subject of color, on which he wrote several specialist books. The best-known work is the “Handbook of Color”, which was first published in 1988 and has been reissued several times. In this work he has systematically summarized his observations, findings and theses. He was the author of the easily understandable “DuMont's Handbook of Color” and helped to establish terms such as warm color or cold color . His works were shown in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad from 1962 to 2010.

After his retirement, Hans Gekeler lived alternately on Ibiza and near Darmstadt. His estate includes numerous oil paintings, watercolors, graphics and some sculptures. Gekeler's grave is located in the forest cemetery in Seeheim .
