Hans Halter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Halter (born April 8, 1938 in Bad Muskau ) is a German medical journalist and author .

Life

Hans Halter studied medicine and is a licensed specialist in skin and venereal diseases . After working as a doctor for a while, he went into journalism in 1972. He was a reporter for Der Spiegel for more than 30 years , working mainly on medical topics. In 1982 he was the first German-speaking journalist to report on the immunodeficiency disease AIDS .

After 1983 a long-standing, sometimes controversial discussion about AIDS developed. Halter was of the opinion that AIDS is a deadly dangerous infectious disease whose "engine" is "promiscuity". In 1986, Halter was the first in the world to report on the decoding of the AIDS virus. He also published in the scientific journal AIDS research on the situation of infected hemophiliacs and gave detailed interviews to several gay scene magazines, such as the Berlin Victory Column .

In 1983 he was awarded the Egon-Erwin-Kisch Prize for his OP report The donor heart must not die in the mirror . Halter is the author and editor of around twenty books (selected from works ). Today he lives in Berlin and works as a freelance writer. During his time as a medical student in Berlin, he worked for months as an escape helper after the Wall was built in 1961 , as only became known in 2011 through an article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Award and controversy

Three decades after the AIDS controversy of the 1980s, in 2013, the Schwule Netzwerk NRW e. V. the editors of the news magazine Der Spiegel , who “for many decades” had helped to shape the discourse “with people-affirming reports on homosexuality that corresponded to the time in question” with the compass needle . With the award of the compass needle , the association has been honoring personalities or institutions who “have made a special contribution to promoting the social acceptance of gays and lesbians” since 2001.

The award of the mirror by the Schwule Netzwerk NRW met with the Deutsche Aidshilfe e. V. to criticism. In January 2013, the association published a statement on its website in which it distances itself from the award ceremony and criticizes the "unspeakable reporting by 'SPIEGEL' at the height of the AIDS crisis". Der Spiegel had "promoted the worst resentment against gay men", in particular Hans Halter had "drawn the image of promiscuous gay men" at regular intervals, "who satisfied their instincts regardless of their own health."

The Schwule Netzwerk NRW responded in March 2013 with a statement that the criticism expressed about the Spiegel award was “not unexpected”. That is why the press release on the award ceremony contained a reference to the “learning process” of the mirror itself, which began with a “not always appropriate” approach to gay men. The head of department Markus Verbeet accepted the compass needle on July 6, 2013 on behalf of the editorial offices of Spiegel and Spiegel online .
