The gay network NRW e. V. is an association organized as an interest and professional association for self-help groups and initiatives of same-sex people in North Rhine-Westphalia . It has set itself the goal of networking , coordinating and shaping the social, cultural and political work of its members , as well as representing their concerns, for example through lobbying, and bringing them into the social dialogue independently of state structures.

Organizational structure, tasks, financing

In the gay network NRW 43 organizations and associations are currently joined. They meet at general meetings, decide on the budget, discuss their interests and elect the board every two years. Membership in the NRW gay network is open to non-profit organizations and groups as well as sponsoring individual members.

The Schwule Netzwerk NRW eV is currently run voluntarily by seven board members. The incumbent board was elected by the general assembly on March 23, 2013 for two years. The regional office of the NRW gay network is located in an office community together with AIDS-Hilfe NRW eV in Cologne . In the regional office, the following tasks are primarily coordinated for the member organizations:

  • professional and organizational advice to member organizations,
  • Organization of networking,
  • professional political interest representation at state level,
  • Public relations for the regional association,
  • Supervision and administration of regional projects for public relations, advice, self-help, advanced training and networking that are funded from state funds.

The Schwule Netzwerk NRW is working on a network organization that is supposed to pick up on and help shape movements and developments inside and outside the association: Gay Pride , help for self-help , voluntary and civic engagement should be promoted, interests of gay and lesbian life should be promoted by same-sex people themselves social dialogue and not just negotiated on behalf of state structures.

Around 90 percent of the funding comes from the budget of the Ministry of Health, Emancipation, Care and Age of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . Own funds are acquired through membership fees, donations and sponsoring.

The non-governmental organization is a member of the NRW state association of the German Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband , AIDS-Hilfe NRW, the lesbian and gay association in Germany (LSVD) and a cooperation partner of the Queer Nations initiative (IQN, → Queer Nationalism ).

history

In December 1990, at the instigation of AIDS-Hilfe NRW, a group met to analyze the possibilities of regional cooperation between gay organizations. Building on this, the activist Claudius Meyer organized a working meeting in January 1991 at which a call for founding a network organization was designed. An "Initiative Schwules Netzwerk NRW" then invited representatives of the gay community to the founding meeting on June 15, 1991 in the house of the German Parity Welfare Association in Dortmund , where the Schwules Netzwerk NRW association was founded. The poster for the founding meeting was a caricature by the comic artist Ralf König . For the 20th anniversary in 2011, he presented the association with a “new edition” of his 1991 drawing. One of the association's first projects was the organization of seminars on media work and for telephone advice and the development of an information pool with contact details for gay groups in North Rhine-Westphalia. While the association's work in 1991 was still covered with around DM 4,000 of its own funds, around DM 100,000 in state funds and around DM 20,000 in own funds were raised for the association's work in 1992, so that working groups were set up, further seminars were organized and a large number of other projects and campaigns were carried out . Since 1993 the association has been inviting people to its annual “ CSD Reception” on the occasion of the Cologne Pride demonstration parade, since 2000 together with AIDS-Hilfe NRW. In 1995, together with the gay association in Germany , the gay network NRW organized the first specialist congress on gay life in old age under the title Gay and Gray .

The compass needle

Since 2001, at its “CSD reception”, the NRW gay network has been giving the “ Compass Needle ” award to “personalities who have made a special contribution to promoting the social acceptance of the gay minority”. In 2006, this prize went to the politician Franz Müntefering and the 18-year-old Deniz Yücel (not identical to the journalist), in 2011 to the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft and the Siegen gay activist Ansgar Cziba, and in 2013 to the editorial offices of Der Spiegel and Spiegel Online and Falk Steinborn for the TV magazine queerblick (→ Homosexuality on TV ). The German AIDS Help criticized the award of the Mirror editorial staff because of the "unspeakable reporting" of the magazine during the "AIDS crisis" (→ mirror -Reporting from May 1982 ). At the award ceremony, Spiegel editor Markus Verbeet “deeply” regretted the injuries caused by the reporting at the time. In 2014 the church president of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau , Volker Jung , and the Duisburg gay activist Wulf Thomas are honored for his commitment to blessing same-sex couples .

In the ruhrbarone weblog , the announced award of the award to Volker Jung was criticized and the laureate was described as a “conservative evangelical”, “whose fellow believers continue to evangelize in large parts of Africa and, under the same umbrella organization of the Evangelical Protestant Church, ensure that with massive lobbying and tolerance Laws will continue to be passed in Africa's unjust states that put people in mortal danger because of their sexual orientation.
