Hans Heinrich Schulthess

Hans Heinrich Schulthess (born March 30, 1665 in Zurich ; † November 12, 1739 , different date November 1738 ibid) was a Swiss politician and pietist .

family

Hans Heinrich Schulthess came from one of the most influential political families in Zurich and was the son of the businessman Hans Ulrich Schulthess (* 1634 in Zurich; September 15, 1678 ibid) and his wife Elisabetha (* 1639 in Zurich; † January 19, 1701), daughter of the theologian Johann Heinrich Ott .

His grandfather was the businessman Hans Heinrich Schulthess (born October 13, 1594 in Zurich; † December 20, 1652 ibid) and his great-grandfather of the same name was the trader Hans Heinrich Schulthess (born May 4, 1569 in Zurich; † 1641 ibid).

Hans Heinrich Schulthess was married to Elisabetha (born May 19, 1667 in Zurich; † December 18, 1720 ibid), daughter of Anton Kitt (1626–1708), since 1688; they had six children together:

  • Anton Schulthess (* 1689 in Zurich; † 1741), married to Magdalena (1695–1765), daughter of Kaspar Schinz (1670–1724);
  • Hans Jakob Schulthess (born January 11, 1691 in Zurich; † July 5, 1761 there), pastor in Schwabendorf ; married first to Klara von Buchau († 1746) and second to Elisabeth (née Grüter) (1711–1774), widow of the heretic Jakob Schmidlin (1699–1747);
  • Elisabeth Schulthess (* 1693 in Zurich; † 1719), married to Hans Heinrich Zuber (1689–1751);
  • Dorothea Schulthess (* 1694 in Zurich; † 1744), married to Hans Heinrich Wirt (1692–1766);
  • Magdalena Schulthess (* 1696 in Zurich; † 1769), married to Hans Kaspar Scheuchzer (1696–1758);
  • Anna Schulthess (* 1698 in Zurich)

Career

He worked as a silk and cotton manufacturer and since 1711 a member of the commercial directorate, a corporation-like association of merchants that was founded in 1662 and, among other things, took care of the maintenance of roads and bridges as well as the postal system.

In 1714 he was appointed Zurich Grand Councilor and envoy in trade, customs and postal matters.

He was in contact with pietistic circles, corresponded with Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf and supported the missionary efforts of the Moravian Colony with a group of like-minded people from Zurich ; he was a pioneer of Zurich pietism.
