Hans Hermann Steffens

Hans Hermann Steffens (born November 8, 1911 in Altona ; † January 19, 2004 in Gordes ( southern France )) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

After a formative encounter with Eduard Bargheer in 1927 and studying at the Pedagogical Academy Altona from 1930 to 1932, he turned to the fine arts and studied between 1935 and 1938 at the Königsberg Art Academy under Heinrich Wolff and Alfred Particle and at the Academy of Fine Arts with Alexander Kanoldt . In 1940 he was drafted into World War II, took part in the Russian campaign and was taken prisoner, which for him was not to end until 1948.

In 1948 he got a teaching position at the School of Applied Arts Giebichenstein (since 1990 Halle University of Art and Design Halle ), but returned in 1949 back to Hamburg. From 1950 to 1957 he preferred to stay in France. During a stay in Paris he met the internationally known gallery owner Denise René , later the gallery owners Jean Louis Roque and Jacques Rouland. During his stays in France he also met the painters Jean-Jacques Deyrolle , Jean Dewasne and Auguste Herbin and in 1970 with the painter Siegfried Klapper .

In 1958 he made Provence his adopted home. Nevertheless, Steffens was busy: from 1956 to 1959 he traveled to Holland, in 1966 he stayed in Spain, where he discovered Romanesque painting, and in 1978 he was in Venice.

As a full member of the German Association of Artists , Hans Hermann Steffens took part in a total of eleven major annual DKB exhibitions between 1953 and 1978. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg awarded him the Edwin Scharff Prize in 1973 together with Volker Meier , and he became a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg .

He painted rather small-format pictures in oil and acrylic and created a variety of watercolors, collages and prints.

Severe shingles ( herpes zoster ) on his face, which he suffered in 1986, made work impossible, at least temporarily. Hans Hermann Steffens died in Gordes in 2004 at the age of 92.
