Life

He was born in what was then South West Africa and graduated from high school in Berlin. 1937–1938 he was trained as a soldier. During World War II he was used as a soldier in Poland, Russia and Italy. During an educational leave he studied painting with Erik Richter for 3 months at what was then the Berlin School of Fine Arts . In 1945 he moved first to Aumühle / Wildeshausen near Oldenburg and then to Bergen-Enkheim near Frankfurt am Main , where he lived with the writer Rolf Schroers, the brother of the Bremen painter Hans Schroers who died in the war, until he was allocated an attic apartment. Later retired to the Arnsburg monastery near Lich in Upper Hesse. From 1968 he lived in a rural farmhouse near Mormoiron in Provence , near Carpentras .

In small to very small format works - often only a hand's breadth in size - he usually drew and painted things from his immediate surroundings. Not as they are, but as he saw them through the filter of his memory, often years later. Apples, summer meadows and trees look petrified. Klapper captured a static and artificial world in meticulous, finest nuances. Empty ruined cities and landscapes, nocturnal forests, fruits and everyday objects acquire a surreal, unreal overtone. Their absolute loneliness pulls the viewer under its spell.

Quotes

"My soul loves to build its nest on the high edges of the worst steel structures and to look up at the sky, which seems to freeze all love for ice with hopelessness." (1957)

"Yes, I would take the risk of living in one of these deserted cities." (1965)

“I came to the south of France to forget the ruined cities and the war. Provence is wonderful in its gray at this time: everything remains subdued, except for the light, which is sometimes unbearable. Here I discovered the moon and the stars. "(1983)
