Live and act

Hans Heuser was born on March 3, 1907 as the son of a senior shunting master in Cölbe, Marburg district. After attending the secondary school in Marburg, his wish to become a naval officer could not be realized in 1928. At the request of parents, he first studied several semesters theology , then one's own inclination turned following the dentistry to. He completed his studies in dentistry in 1933 with the state examination and obtained his doctorate a year later. med. dent. with the topic "Tooth gap pits of the maxillary sinus". After four years of assistantship under Hans H. Seidel (1886–1933) and Hans Fliege , he completed his habilitation in 1938 with the otologist Walther Uffenorde with a thesis on the maxillary sinus . Has worked at the Dental Institute of the University of Marburg since 1934, he was appointed lecturer in 1938 and senior physician in 1939. In 1942 he obtained his medical license and a year later he received his doctorate. med. and was appointed associate professor in 1944.

On May 1, 1937, Heuser joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP, membership number 4,627,865) and several other NS organizations ( Sturmabteilung (SA), National Socialist German Lecturers' Association (NSDDB), National Socialist Teachers' Association (NSLB), National Socialist People's Welfare (NSV)) On the other hand, he showed himself to be politically “subversive” by protecting “a politically persecuted woman and her half-Jewish daughter” and not disclosing the daughter's whereabouts even when the district leader was interrogated in January 1945. Probably against this background, his discharge in Marburg, which was arranged by the Allied authorities in 1945, was withdrawn at short notice and he was given the temporary management of the clinic. As part of the denazification process in August 1947, Heuser was initially classified in category IV (fellow travelers), then in the revision process in August 1949 classified in category V (exonerated).

In 1947 he was again entrusted with the provisional management of the institute. In 1951 he was appointed to the chair of dentistry at the University of Marburg and at the same time appointed director of the institute. Heuser immediately campaigned for the construction of a new clinic for dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine, which could be moved into in 1963 after five years of planning and around four years of construction. The medical faculty elected him as their dean for the year 1966/67.

Heuser had been a member of the State Health Council in Hesse since 1952, headed the training of the Hesse Dental Association, district office Kassel, and was editor of the magazine Stoma since 1954 . In his scientific career he has written over 100 scientific articles and has authored several dental books. His preferred scientific interests were caries prophylaxis with a focus on fluoridation , dental radiology and histology. In a report dated February 27, 1950 about the fluoridation experiment planned by Heinrich Hornung in Kassel, he stated, “that the ideal solution for hardening teeth protection can be seen in general fluorination of drinking water in the Hessian communities . It must be the ultimate goal in all our endeavors. ”With the support of the Blendax company, he and his assistant Wilhelm Kessler carried out experiments on“ hardening of mouthguards ”(after an appeal by Walter Drum ) on Marburg children between 1950 and 1952 . The two percent NaF solution produced by Hertha Hesse was combined with Blendax toothpaste containing ammonium in some of the children and thus led to a greater reduction in caries than the fluoride brushing alone. In 1953 he was one of the founding members of the European Working Group for Fluorine Research and Caries Prophylaxis (ORCA) . As Vice President of ORCA in 1956, he organized its annual congress, which took place in Marburg and Kassel (with a visit to the fluoridation plant there).

In January 1973, Hans Heuser died of sudden cardiac death in a drive hunt. The academic memorial service took place on January 24, 1973.
