Hans Jürgen Press (born May 15, 1926 in Klein Konopken in Masuria , † October 19, 2002 in Hamburg ) was a German writer and illustrator.

Life

After Hans Jürgen Press - without ever having been in the war - was taken prisoner by the Americans, he was interned in the United States and then in England. His artistic talent helped him that he was spared from the war effort and was able to make sketches on site in Texas and Louisiana. Wall frescoes in the officers' mess in Building 98 in Marfa (Texas) have been partially preserved; they have been listed as a national monument since 2004 and are a sight.

Press moved to Hamburg in 1948 , where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts . He became known as a cartoonist, illustrator and children's book author. From 1953 he drew and wrote for Sternchen , the children's supplement to the magazine Stern , initially mainly search pictures, games and handicraft tips, but also small experiments and natural history observations. From 1960 onwards, The Adventures of the Black Hand , Mitrate thrillers combined from image and text, appeared there in sequels, in which questions were asked in the text that could be resolved by closely observing details in Press' drawings. Finally, on January 3, 1965, his character “ Little Herr Jakob ” made his debut , also in the star : a little man of indeterminable age with a mustache and bowler hat , who initially existed wordlessly in comic strips that were later provided with rhyming comments.

Press published numerous puzzle and game books as well as books on the subjects of nature and knowledge. He is considered one of the inventors of hidden objects , who hid many details in his full-page illustrations for puzzle books. His books have been translated into over 60 foreign languages. In 2002, the year he died, his books had a total circulation of 5.5 million. I.a. In 1985 he was awarded the Goldenes Taschenbuch cultural award. Some of his stories found their way into German school books. Two of his series have also been evaluated for television: The adventures of the »black hand « from 1974 on the ARD children's program (using filmed illustrations and spoken text) and from 2005 on the pay-TV channel Junior Der kleine Herr Jakob , a series of Short animated films, produced in Great Britain 1996–99.

His son Julian Press is also a writer and illustrator.
