Hans Karl Döring

Hans Karl Döring (born January 2, 1909 in Aschersleben , † January 22, 1978 in Stuttgart ) was a German sculptor and designer who worked mainly in India from 1939.

Career in Germany

Hans Döring first completed an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor and then ran a small studio in Aschersleben. In March 1929 he made a Beethoven sculpture out of snow and other snow sculptures on Burgplatz. Thereafter studied Döring with the help of a grant from the Ramdohr 'rule mild Foundation 1929-1931 sculpture at the Art Academy in Dresden as a master student of Georg Wrba . Döring's works were exhibited by the Saxon Art Association in 1930 .

From 1935 on, Döring had his own sculpting studio in Dresden. At events organized by the Dresden painters' guild around 1936 he also met Walter Buhe and Lilo Ramdohr , who at that time studied expressive dance with Mary Wigman . In 1936 he designed four bronze putti for the entrances to the Aschersleben town hall , which were lost in 1945 at the end of the Second World War and are no longer preserved today. In addition, not least out of gratitude for his scholarship, he made the granite bust of Johann Daniel Ramdohr, still standing on the Promenadenring, which was inaugurated on November 21, 1937 by Albert Drosihn, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ramdohr Foundation.

Emigration and Career in India

In order to escape the increasing racist reprisals, Döring emigrated to India in 1939, where he was able to marry his Jewish fiancée. After the outbreak of war, however, he was captured as a German by the English colonial authorities and was only released in 1945. From then on he was one of the most famous sculptors in India, where he advanced to professor of sculpture in 1953. He created many of the early sculptures of Indian leaders, including his most famous 1954 work, a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of Vadodara City Hall . Döring was also involved in the establishment of the Indian National Museum in New Delhi . In addition, Hans Döring constructed the first Indian Glider , which in today Air Museum of the airport Safdarjung be visited (New Delhi).

His first daughter Renee married Colonel Shamsher Singh, Rajvallabh, a ministerial candidate and aide-de-camp of Major General Pratap Singh Rao Gaekwad , the last maharajah of Baroda State , with whom she has a son (Ishwar Singh).

His second daughter Yvonne Marion Rachel Joy marries the Stuttgart businessman Uli Götz Balluff with whom she has a son (Marc Balluff). She has lived in the Stuttgart area since 1961.

In 1961 Döring returned to Germany and stayed in Aschersleben in 1962, among other things as a guest at the Stephaneum. Döring did not stay permanently in his hometown. He moved to Stuttgart, where he opened a gallery with a shop for Indian goods. Döring died in Stuttgart in 1978.
