Hans Nirrnheim (born July 29, 1865 in Hamburg-St. Georg , † July 31, 1945 in Hamburg ) was a German archivist and historian .

Live and act

After attending the higher middle school of his father Fritz Louis Nirrnheim (1830–1906) and the learned school of the Johanneum , he studied from 1886 classical philology, history and literature in Bonn , Berlin and Strasbourg . In Strasbourg he received his doctorate on March 1, 1890 with Paul Scheffer-Boichorst with a thesis on Hamburg and East Frisia in the 15th century and then passed the state examination there.

His activity as a teacher at the Wilhelm-Gymnasium Hamburg was short-lived; as early as the fall of 1892 he began as a volunteer at the Hamburg State Archives and three months later became a paid research assistant. In 1901 he married Henny Hugo; the almost 25-year marriage remained childless. In 1919 the Hamburg Senate awarded him the title of professor, in 1920 he was appointed archivist and in 1922 senior archivist. After his predecessor Anton Hagedorn retired , he headed the State Archives from 1924 and was appointed Director of the State Archives at the beginning of 1926. After the Senate, in deviation from the statutory provisions, repeatedly extended Nirrnheim's term of office beyond the age of 65, he retired on May 15, 1933.

Nirrnheim achieved particular importance for research on the history of Hamburg and the Hanseatic League through the publication of historical sources (see works). In addition, he wrote scientific essays, summaries, representations and life pictures, which appeared mainly in the publication series of the Association for Hamburg History .

From 1890 he worked in the Association for Hamburg History , from 1911 as a member of the board, from 1912 to 1937 as first chairman and then again from 1940 to 1945 as a representative of his successor, who was drafted into military service. From 1898 to 1908 he was editor of the notices of the Association for Hamburg History and from 1908 until his death head of the editorial committee of the association magazine. Nirrnheim had been a member of the board of the Hanseatic History Association since 1932.

Hans Nirrnheim was buried in the family grave of the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg, grid square AA 17 (south-west of the north pond ).
