Hans Peter Feddersen

Hans Peter Feddersen (born April 7, 1905 in Kiebitzzeile near Hamburg, † August 7, 1998 in Hilden ) was a German sculptor . He is not to be confused with the painter Hans Peter Feddersen the Younger (1848–1941) or his father Hans Peter Feddersen the Elder (1788–1860).

Life

Crouching Monkey in Hamburg City Park (1955)

After attending the Oberrealschule in Hamburg-Bergedorf and the day trade school in Hamburg, Feddersen completed a two-year apprenticeship with a building sculptor. He then studied for five years at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg am Lerchenfeld (today the Hamburg University of Fine Arts ), most recently as a master class student with Richard Luksch . He was a soldier in World War II and was taken prisoner at the end of the war. In 1946 Feddersen came back to Hamburg and was one of the founders of the Baukreis (the Baukreis, workshop community and educational institution for all arts). Hans Peter Feddersen then moved to Hilden near Düsseldorf and led sculpture courses at the building group's branch established there. After the building group was dissolved in 1953, Feddersen continued to give courses in sculpture at the Hilden Adult Education Center and in his private studio for decades .

Feddersen's style is determined by smooth surfaces and clear curves, by simplifications and stylizations. His special talent was to simplify the body and especially the representations of animals to the essentials so that they enter into a unity with the natural environment. Most of his early works are representational in nature. Later he moved more and more away from the relatively naturalistic representation and created abstract shapes (“Growing Force”, 1963). In addition to numerous sculptures for public spaces, he created small sculptures and everyday objects, and he also created a sculpture for the German post-war film “Madonna in Chains” (1949).

In 1979 he was a co-founder of the Haus Hildener Künstler e. V. Allegedly he shaped the townscape of Hilden in the twentieth century like no other artist. Feddersen was also a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association .
