Hans Peter Kohns (born May 29, 1931 in Andernach ; † November 2, 2003 ) was a German ancient historian .

The son of a valve fitter passed his Abitur at the Görres-Gymnasium in Koblenz in 1952 . He then began studying theology at the University of Trier , but switched to the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 1952 . The final choice of course fell on the subjects of history, classical philology - both Latin and Greek - and philosophy. In 1958 he passed the first state examination in history and Latin. He did his doctorate in 1958 under Johannes Straub on the subject of supply crises and famines in late ancient Rome . He then worked in the school service for a few years until Straub brought him back to university in 1964. In 1965, Kohns became a senior teacher and in 1968 a senior teacher. In 1971 he was promoted to full professor. In 1971/72 he took on a teaching position at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf , which corresponded to a regular professorship. His academic teaching and publication activities were recognized as the equivalent of a habilitation, which is why Kohns was appointed associate professor at the University of Bonn in 1982. He remained in this position until his retirement on July 31, 1996.

His research focus was the ancient social and economic history.
