Hans Rectanus

Hans Rectanus (born February 18, 1935 in Worms am Rhein ) is a German musicologist, music teacher, organist and choir director.

Life

Rectanus studied musicology, German literature , art history , pedagogy and philosophy at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Vienna from 1955 to 1960 , as well as school music at the Frankfurt State University for Music and Performing Arts , choral conducting with Kurt Thomas , orchestral conducting with Karl Maria Zwißler . At the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna , he was a member of Hans Swarowsky's conducting class .

After the first and second state examination for teaching at secondary schools and teaching in the fields of music, German and Latin, he took a job as a research assistant at the Institute for Music Education at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and received his doctorate there in 1966 when Helmuth Osthoff with a work on the music-dramatic works of Hans Pfitzner . In the same year he was appointed lecturer at the Heidelberg University of Education and in 1971 he was appointed professor for music and its didactics; From 1989 to 2003 he was also a lecturer at Frankfurt University.

In 1968 Rectanus passed the exam for full-time church musicians (B-Exam) at the Evangelical Church Music School Schlüchtern and was appointed " Choir Director" by the Federal Association of German Choir Associations and "Music Director" by the Association of German Professional Choir Directors. For over 40 years he led choirs of all genres, with whom he also performed larger works such as the Choral Fantasy (Beethoven), The Creation (Haydn), the Carmina burana (Orff). Concert tours have taken him to England, France, Holland and Bulgaria. In addition to numerous organ concerts in the region, he was invited to Passau, Strasbourg, Lyon, Luxembourg and Williamsburg (USA), among others.

Rectanus is a member of the executive committee of the Hans Pfitzner Society and was a member of the music committee of the Baden Choir Association for 10 years.

Research and work focus

In the musicological field, he published 30 essays in anthologies and specialist journals on Hans Pfitzner, the same number on music-pedagogical and choral topics. He is the editor of the complete edition (in two volumes) of the songs of Hans Pfitzner and some early chamber music works as well as the author of personal and material articles in music pedagogical and musicological lexicons, including 16 articles in the 28-volume revision of the music encyclopedia " Music in Past and Present " (MGG.).
