Hans Rev (also Hans Reff ; * approx. 1489 in Denmark ; † July / August 1545 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian clergyman. He was the last Roman Catholic bishop in the diocese of Oslo before the Reformation and later the first Lutheran superintendent (bishop) of the diocese of Oslo of the Lutheran Church in Norway .

Life

Little is known about Rev's origins and training, except that he was of Danish origin and studied in Paris , among other places , where he obtained a master's degree in Roman and Canon Law . He worked as a secretary for Erik Valkendorf , who took him to Nidaros ( Trondheim ) (probably already when he was elected archbishop ) . There Rev (probably 1515) became a member of the cathedral chapter and in 1520 was responsible for printing the Breviarium Nidrosiense and the Missale Nidrosiense , the first liturgical books printed for Norway. In 1525 Rev was appointed Bishop of Oslo thanks to the support of Archbishop Olav Engelbrektsson and King Frederick I.

As a member of the Imperial Council, more concerned with political than spiritual matters, he supported King Christian II in an attempt to recapture Norway in 1531 , but then sided with Friedrich I. After his death in 1533, he also supported his son Christian III . in the civil war , despite its sympathy for the Lutheran Reformation. Nevertheless, he and the other Catholic bishops of Denmark and Norway were declared deposed by the king in August 1536. Archbishop Engelbrektsson captured him but was forced to release him in 1537. On November 1, 1537, Rev renounced his episcopal dignity and the rights associated with it in a letter to the king.

Since it was not possible to find a competent Lutheran successor , Geble Pederssøn , introduced in 1537 as Lutheran superintendent for the diocese of Bergen, first introduced the Reformation in the diocese of Oslo. Rev was meanwhile in Denmark. In the autumn of 1541 he was reinstated as superintendent for his old diocese, which was connected to the diocese of Hamar . (It was not until the 17th century that the superintendents in Denmark and Norway reassumed the title of bishop.) Through visitations and pastor synods , he now promoted the implementation of Lutheran teaching.
