Hans Rothe (Slavist)

Hans Rothe (born May 5, 1928 in Berlin ) is a German philologist and Slavist .

Life

He spent his youth on his parents' estate in Samonienen ( Samoniny in Polish ) in East Prussia. He attended high school in Goldap (Polish Gołdap ) up to secondary school. In 1944 he was a flak helper in Hamburg. After graduating from high school in Hamburg in 1947, he studied Slavic and Indo-European philology and church history from 1947 to 1954 in Kiel, Marburg and London and again in Marburg. In 1954 he received his doctorate in Kiel with a linguistic thesis on Old Church Slavonic. From 1954 to 1963 he was assistant to Alfred Rammelmeyer and Herbert Brauer in Marburg, where he in 1963 with a thesis on Karamzin habilitated. After professorships from 1954 to 1955 in Berlin (FU) and from 1955 to 1956 in Marburg, he was appointed to Bonn in 1966, where he taught until his retirement in 1993. There he continues to head the Patristic Commission of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences.
