Act

Sabel's compositional work is shaped by his strong ties to church music as well as by his work as a university teacher for music education. It was always important to him to create works that could also be performed by laypeople or to involve the church community musically in the well-composed worship service in such a way that they could participate to a large extent in the musical and artistic creation. Here he created some significant works, partly as commissioned compositions for the central worship services of the German Catholic Days (e.g. Praise the Lord 1966) or his works in connection with the pilgrimages to the "Holy Rock" in Trier. Particularly noteworthy here is the “ Trier Marienvesper ”.

In addition, motets and masses were created for numerous occasions, a “ German Te Deum ”, the “ Tholeyer Johannespassion ” or the “ Trier Lied Mass for Christmas ”. Several choir and organ masses, Proprien with brass players (alternatively organ), masses for choir ac, many of them with the participation of the community and / or various instruments can be found in his work. For work in schools he wrote countless 2-4-part secular and also sacred choral songs for almost every occasion.

In his early days he created stage works such as the “ Kölner Mysterienspiel ” and the youth operas: “ Till Eulenspiegel's funny pranks ”, “ The Heinzelmännchen of Cologne ” and “ Max and Moritz ”. In the field of instrumental music there is a string quartet for the Archbishop of Cologne Josef Cardinal Frings , Sabel's music for bassoon and piano , a bassoon quartet , variations on Gregorian melodies for organ solo and much more.
