life and work

Hans Schönauer can be traced back to Eichstätt for the first time in 1685 when he got married here. In 1693 he applied unsuccessfully as a master mason for the cathedral. However, he received the position after he was entered in the master book of the city of Eichstätt in 1695. From the end of the 1690s he appeared as a visitor to church buildings, assessing damage and making suggestions for repair work. Under the prince-bishop's court architect Jakob Engel , he was responsible as court mason from 1699–1701 for the construction of the Eichstätter hospital church according to Engels' plans. When the arches of the vault were removed too early and the arches collapsed, Schönauer was held responsible for the accident that cost two or three lives, according to a prince-bishop's arbitration. But he continued to receive orders. So he built a new rectory in Etting in 1701/02, which was settled in 1706. In 1710 he worked as a palier in the construction of the new churches in Hofstetten (presumably according to plans by Engels) and Pfalzpaint (evidently according to plans by Engels) and in 1711 he rebuilt the Maria Schnee cemetery chapel in Eichstätt.

In 1722 Schönauer is referred to as "Wittiber" (= widower), who sold his dwelling in Eichstätter Schlaggasse (house number 6; formerly A 101; he lived here since 1693).
