Hans Schmidt (type designer)
Hans Schmidt (born January 14, 1923 in Leipzig ; † May 14, 2019 ) was a type designer and graphic artist .
biography
After an apprenticeship as a cartolithographer and military service from 1942 onwards, Schmidt studied from 1947 to 1951 at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig and then worked as a typographer for Eggebrecht-Presse in Mainz . In addition, he took on teaching assignments for typography and writing at the Landeskunstschule Mainz. In 1961 he became a lecturer and later professor for typography and book design at what is now the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main .
In 1970 the Klingspor Museum dedicated the exhibition "Hans Schmidt shows new forms of writing" to him, where numerous text reliefs were shown. In 1988 the Herzog August Library , Wolfenbüttel, the Klingspor Museum, Offenbach and the Städtische Galerie Villa Zanders , Bergisch Gladbach presented a traveling exhibition on the work of the type artist under the title " Font by Hans Schmidt " . For Schmidt's 85th birthday, the 2008 Klingspor Museum hosted the exhibition “From the linear to the voluminous. Font by Hans Schmidt ” .
Schmidt lived and worked in Badenhard / Hunsrück since his retirement in 1983 .
