Ripkens initially worked as an editor in a Catholic publishing house. In the summer of 1957 he met the newspaper editor Hans Stempel in Düsseldorf, who became his partner. Shortly afterwards they moved into an apartment in Düsseldorf. By their outing they lost their jobs. Then you worked as a film critic and produced your first short film Stenogramme , which, however, flopped. In the 1970s, Ripkens also had minor roles in German films such as Die Experts .

Ripkens and Stempel later lived in Munich , where they worked for 30 years as film auditors in Leo Kirch's company until films were bought in packages instead of being selected individually. In 1980 they shot the documentary How does a man go for ZDF ? in which they report on the image of the homosexual in the film. The film was shown at the Berlinale in 1982 , as was her drama A Love Like Others the following year . This film with Klaus Adler and Stuart Wolfe also screened in competition at the Chicago International Film Festival . Ripkens and Stempel also published books for children and young people and anthologies on the subject of homosexuality. In 2000, her autobiography, Das Glück ist kein Pet , was published by Deutsches Taschenbuch Verlag , in which they take turns reporting on their lives in a diary-like form. They remained a couple until Ripken's death. He died on June 24, 2012 at the age of 78 as a result of a cerebral haemorrhage.
