Hans Strassl , also Hans Straßl , (born January 10, 1907 in Rauischholzhausen ; † July 8, 1996 ) was a German astronomer and director of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Münster .

life and work

Hans Strassl was born in Rauischholzhausen near Marburg . After graduating from high school in Fulda , he studied mathematics and physics at the Universities of Marburg and Göttingen , where he also took astronomy . In 1928 he passed the diploma examination for insurance experts (mathematical class). In 1932 he received his doctorate in Göttingen with Hans Kienle as part of the “Spectrophotometric Investigations” project with a thesis on the spectra of the Pleiades . These measurements were among the first to enable an exact determination of the surface temperature of stars .

Strassl stayed at the university until 1937, where he was denied a career because of his political views. From 1937 to 1945 he worked at the aerodynamic research institute in Göttingen in the field of flow theory and high-speed experiments.

In 1945 he returned to the University, where he in 1948 with a contribution to Nomographie habilitated . In this area, Strassl became an international authority. In 1948 he became an observer at the University of Bonn . In the 1950s, he helped build the university's radio telescope : he created the nomograms for the telescope control.

In 1958 he became associate professor , in 1964 full professor at the University of Münster and first director of the Astronomical Institute. In this role he supervised 12 dissertations.

Strassl was a board member of the Astronomical Society and co-editor of the magazine " Die Sterne ".

Strassl was a knight of the papal order of Gregorius .
