Hans Sundermann

Hans Sundermann (born December 14, 1924 in Detmold ; † January 20, 2002 ) was Professor of Biology Didactics at the University of Wuppertal . As an orchid researcher, he was the organizer of the Wuppertal orchid conferences from 1963 to 1993.

Life

Sundermann grew up in Detmold and attended elementary school and high school for boys there. In 1943 he had to drop out of school and do military service. After a brief prisoner-of-war period, he took part in a transition course for combatants from October 1945 to March 1946, which he completed with the school-leaving examination.

He then took up a degree in natural sciences in chemistry, biology and physics at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . His goal was to become a chemist. In November 1950 he passed his final exam as a chemist, which also entitles him to become a teacher. Sundermann worked as an assistant in the animal physiology department of the Chemical Institute of the University of Mainz from November 1950 to May 1953. During this time he worked on his dissertation entitled " On the possibility of a biotropism of air-electrical phenomena ". On March 20, 1953, he was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. PhD.

In 1953 he turned to Wuppertal and took up a job as a chemist at the Bayer paint factory in Elberfeld. After one year of employment, he switched to a career as a teacher and took up a job at the natural science high school in Remscheid. For the second year of his legal traineeship, he moved to the Carl-Duisberg-Gymnasium in Wuppertal in April 1955 and passed the second state examination.

From 1956 to 1958 he worked as a study assessor at the Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium in der Aue in Wuppertal. From 1958 to 1965 Sundermann was a teacher and senior teacher at the Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium in Wuppertal.

In addition to his professional activity, Sundermann was appointed honorary director of the Natural Science and City History Museum in 1963, which was later renamed the Fuhlrott Museum . In this office he worked full-time from 1965 to 1967.

In October 1967 Sundermann was appointed full professor for the didactics of biology at the Pedagogical University of Rhineland, Dept. Wuppertal . From 1963 Sundermann had a teaching position at the Pedagogical Academy, as the university was called until 1965.

Sundermann retired in 1990, after a long illness he died at the age of 77 in early 2002.

Private

Sundermann married in 1952.

Awards

For his services to orchid research, he was awarded the Rhineland Thaler in 1985 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1986 .
