Hans Thoma (engineer)
Hans Thoma (born July 12, 1887 in Dorpat ; † 1973 ) was a German engineer and professor at the Institute for Electrical Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe .
Life
Thoma studied at the Technical Universities of Braunschweig and Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1913 . He participated in a leading position with the expansion of the hydropower plants on the Middle Isar Canal until he was appointed full professor and holder of the chair for electrical energy systems and high voltage technology on October 1, 1924 , and succeeded Anton Schwaiger . In 1945 he resigned from office, successor was Guntram Lesch .
With his invention of the fast radial piston machine in 1922 and in 1929 together with Heinrich Kosel the invention of the bent axis machine , an axial piston machine , he was also a pioneer of technical hydraulics .
Thoma was married to Else Föppl, daughter of the engineer, inventor and university professor August Föppl and lived in Zollikon near Zurich from 1944 .
Awards
In 1965 he received the Rudolf Diesel Medal in gold.
