Hans Vogel (art historian)

Hans Martin Erasmus Vogel (born July 29, 1897 in Stettin , † August 14, 1973 in Braunlage ) was a German art historian .

Life

Hans Vogel's father was a businessman in Stettin, his grandfather Ernst Vogel was a teacher and member of the Frankfurt National Assembly. Vogel attended the humanistic grammar school in Stettin until he graduated from high school in 1916 and then took part in the First World War as a deputy sergeant until 1918 and was seriously wounded. From 1919 to 1923 he first studied political science in Greifswald, Leipzig, Munich and Vienna and graduated in 1923 with a Dr. rer. pole. in Vienna, from 1923 to 1925 then art history in Marburg and Leipzig and graduated with a Dr. phil. from Wilhelm Pinder in Leipzig. In 1925/26 he was a trainee at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Leipzig , and in 1926/27 he was an art-historical lexicon editor at Brockhaus-Verlag in Leipzig. From March to October 1927 he worked for the establishment of a arts and crafts and local history museum in Zeulenroda and in 1928/29 assistant at the municipal museum in Halle .

From 1929 to 1932 he taught as a lecturer in art history at the State Art Academy in Kassel . From 1932 to 1934 he was an unpaid assistant at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel . His continued employment was due to the “non-Aryan descent” of his wife Susanne, née. Neißer, not possible. In 1934/35 he worked for the inventory of the art monuments of Hohenzollern in Sigmaringen and tried in vain to emigrate. In 1936 he worked on the library and copper engraving collection of Friedrich Heinrich Prince of Prussia in Kamenz , from 1937 he was a commercial clerk in the prince's asset management. 1945 Persecution and escape from the Gestapo because of his so-called " mixed marriage ".

From 1946 to 1961 he was director of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel.
