Hans Arthur Vollmer (pseudonym Johannes Vollmer ; born February 9, 1871 in Kaiserswerth , † August 10, 1941 in Hamburg ) was a German educator and theologian .

Live and act

Hans Vollmer, whose father worked as a seminar teacher, passed his school leaving examination in Düsseldorf in 1890 . He completed a degree in theology and philology at the University of Bonn in 1895 with a doctorate in theology . on "The Old Testament Quotes from Paul". On June 13, 1896, he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post in Bonn. After the practical training at the grammar school seminar in 1896/97, he moved to Hamburg for the probationary year 1897/98. Here he taught at the Johanneum School of Scholars . On October 1, 1898, he received a position as senior teacher for religion, Hebrew, Latin and German at the local high school. In 1901 he gave substitute lessons at the Höhere Staatsschule Cuxhaven and then came back to the learned school of the Johanneum.

In 1912 Vollmer was appointed director of the secondary school in St. Pauli . Since he did not want to run for the necessary re-election in 1919, his period of service ended in 1919. He then switched to teaching at the Kirchenpauer-Realgymnasium, where he stayed until 1931. In 1909/10 and 1922/22 he took a six-month vacation, during which he continued his education.

In 1930 Vollmer took over the management of the German Bible Archive in Hamburg and was given a temporary leave of absence from teaching for this position. In addition, he taught religion at the Institute for Teacher Training. In the winter semester of 1928/29 he held courses on “Sacred Texts and Their Use” at the General Lecture Department. On May 31, 1934, he retired due to old age and continued to work for the Bible Archives.

From 1918 to 1933 Vollmer was a member of the German National People's Party .

Works

Vollmer wrote about individual books of the Bible, about Bible editions and image processing. He dealt with the history of religion and created the first edition of the "Historia Scholastica" by Petrus Comestor . In a text edition he explained the Nibelungenlied and edited the Adam book, which was written in the 15th century and can be found in the manuscript collection of the Hamburg city library .

Honors

On April 30, 1922, the University of Bonn made Vollmer an honorary theological doctorate. In 1930 he received the Leibniz Medal of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
