Hans Wießmann (born February 26, 1888 in Fürth ; † December 17, 1935 in Jena ) was a German agricultural chemist and soil scientist .

Life

Hans Wießmann studied natural sciences at the University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1911 from the University of Erlangen with a dissertation on the chemical element ruthenium . He then worked as a scientific assistant at the local university institute for botany. From 1915 to 1925 he worked at the Institute for Agricultural Chemistry and Bacteriology at the Agricultural University in Berlin . During this time noteworthy work was done, including the chemical preservation of manure and liquid manure as well as the influence of light on the growth and nutrient uptake of agricultural crops . Together with the agricultural chemist Otto Lemmermann , he published several articles in the “Journal for Plant Nutrition, Fertilization and Soil Science” on the yield-increasing effect of silica in the case of insufficient phosphate fertilization . 1921 awarded him the Agricultural University of Berlin , the Venia legendi for the subject of Soil Science .

In 1925 Wießmann went to Rostock and took over the management of the scientific department of the agricultural research station. At the same time he gave lectures on soil science and plant nutrition at the university there. In 1926 he was appointed associate professor. In the same year he published a study and textbook on quantitative analyzes under the title Agricultural Chemistry Internship , which enjoyed great popularity with the students and of which two revised editions were published after Wießmann's death.

In 1930 Wießmann was appointed director of the agricultural research station Kassel - Harleshausen . In 1932 he accepted a call to the University of Jena as professor and director of the Institute for Agricultural Chemistry . At the same time he took over the management of the Thuringian agricultural research station. In Jena he worked in particular on questions of gas absorption in arable land. From 1934 to 1935 Wießmann was chairman of the "Association of German Agricultural Research Institutes". A chlorine gas poisoning , which he had contracted during experimental lecture, led to his untimely death.
