Inscription on the sacristy of the church in Pfaffenhofen, which identifies Wunderer as a builder

Hans Wunderer (born probably before 1463 in Pfaffenhofen - after 1526) was a builder from Pfaffenhofen around 1500 .

Act

Wunderer was involved in the construction of the Petruskirche in Gerlingen , which began in 1463 and was completed after 1493 , where his stonemason's mark can be found on the western keystone of the choir. His master's mark is also on the choir of the Protestant parish church in Zaberfeld , which was added in 1505 , in the sacristy of the church in Magstadt , on the sacristy of the Lambertus church in Pfaffenhofen built in 1515 , on the sacristy of the Laurentius church in Hemmingen and in the nave of the church in Friolzheim, which was expanded in 1522 to see. He could also have been involved in the construction of the sacristy of the Georgskirche in Hausen an der Zaber , since the services there are stylistically similar to those of his other buildings. For 1521 he is listed as "Hans Wunderer von Pfaffenhofen" among the other builders of the Cistercian monastery in the Maulbronn Oberamt. He is said to have built the Pfisterei there. He was probably entrusted with the renovation of the late Gothic church in Mühlhausen near Vaihingen an der Enz in 1526 .

Peasants' War

At 1525 in appears Bauernkrieg a jack Wunderer as a peasant leader who has come during the Peasants' War to death. It is not known whether it was the master builder or his possibly eponymous son. In some sources it is rather excluded that he was identical with this one. But there are also descriptions in which a "Hans Wunderer von Pfaffenhofen" is mentioned, who was appointed captain of a heap and who was charged with looting the Stocksberg Castle and then the Maulbronn monastery. Another description also mentions this leader as an "artful master". Gustav Bossert wrote elsewhere that the “capable master builder Hans Wunderer von Pfaffenhofen and the restless landlord Jakob Rohrbach von Bökkingen” took the lead in this movement. Eduard Paulus was convinced: "Master Hans Wunderer von Pfaffenhofen is without a doubt the passionate peasant leader who burned the old duke's castle in Teck on May 3, 1525"
