Hans Theodor Hugo von Hallwyl (born December 28, 1835 - † June 16, 1909 in Überlingen ; resident in Bern and Brugg ) was a Swiss politician . From 1866 to 1875 he was Councilor of the Canton of Aargau .

biography

The son of the art patron Theodor von Hallwyl came from the Aargau-Bernese von Hallwyl family , which can be traced back to the 12th century. Hallwyl received his school lessons from Reformed clergymen, u. a. Jacob Kirchner. He then studied geology at the Universities of Bern and Berlin . In 1861 he married Esther von May von Rued , the daughter of Friedrich Amadeus Sigmund von May and Julie von May von Rued . The daughter brought Schloss Rued and the Belletruche estate into the marriage.

In the military, Hans von Hallwyl rose to lieutenant colonel . He was close to old liberalism and maintained an aristocratic lifestyle. In 1863 he was elected to the Grand Council . Three years later, he was elected to the cantonal government. He belonged to it until 1875 and during this time he headed the military department and the building department. After Hans von Hallwyl had already started various renovation and renovation work on Hallwyl Castle in the 1860s , he had extensive renovations carried out in the neo-Gothic style from 1871 to 1873. The founding crisis drove him into bankruptcy in 1874 , after which he sold the castle to his brother Walther, who lived in Stockholm .

For several years he worked in the railway industry in Serbia . He divorced in 1879 and married the Austrian Hedwig Styx in 1882. He spent the evening of his life with her at Burgberg Castle near Überlingen .
