Hans von Seggern

Hans von Seggern (born April 24, 1914 in Oldenburg ; † May 23, 2020 there ) was a German pastor , author and officer .

Life

Seggern came from Oldenburg; his father, council member Heinrich von Seggern, founded and ran the first Oldenburg travel agency there.

He began to study law in Heidelberg in 1933 , but after two years he was drafted into the military and trained as an officer. During the Second World War he was head of a motorcycle rifle company, most recently Major i. G. and was taken prisoner in Belgium in 1945 . After the war he was initially an apprentice in his parents' travel agency, but then decided on a career as a pastor at the suggestion of the then Oldenburg Bishop Wilhelm Stählin . He completed his vicariate in Westerstede , and then worked in this parish as a pastor for seven years. In 1958 he was appointed as a military chaplain to Fontainebleau near Paris . Hans von Seggern looked after 2,000 Germans and taught religion and confirmation to 500 children. From 1966 to 1976 he was theological consultant in the Protestant Church Office of the military chaplaincy in Bonn . After the death of his first wife in 1963, he married a pastor with whom he worked for another seven years in a church in his hometown of Oldenburg.

Trivia

In the episode of the quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, broadcast on March 14, 2016 ? At 101, Seggern was the oldest telephone joker in the history of the show. For his son Christoph he was able to answer the 125,000 euro question correctly:

When he was confirmed in 1929, he had received and read a book about the beginnings of flying that contained the correct answer.
