Hanumangarh is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan .
The city is located in the Thar Desert in northern Rajasthan. Hanumangarh is the capital of the district of the same name . The Ghaggar River flows past Hanumangarh. The city is divided into two centers: the original city of Hanumangarh Town with the fortress Bhatner and Hanumangarh Junction , an important railway junction in the north of Rajasthan with connections to Sri Ganganagar , Mandi Dabwali , Suratgarh and Bhadra . In the 2011 census, the population was 150,958.
The fortress and city was founded as Bhatner (or Bhatnair ) in AD 255 by Bhupat, son of Bhati, king of Jaisalmer . With the conquest of the city in 1805 by Maharaja Surat Singh von Bikaner , it changed its name to Hanumangarh .
