Wool panties

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.

The woolen panties , also known as panty hummingbirds or snow pants , are small hummingbirds of the genera Eriocnemis and Haplophaedia , which are native to the Andean regions of Bolivia , Colombia , Ecuador , Peru , Venezuela and Argentina . Their habitat are tropical and subtropical mountain and cloud forests as well as grasslands at altitudes of 1500 to 4500 m above sea level. The males of the genus Eriocnemis have colorful, iridescent plumage. Their most noticeable feature are dense, white, dense tufts of feathers on the legs, which give the impression of woolen panties. In one type - the black panties - the feather panties are black. Other common features of all Eriocnemis species are the golden-green dorsal feathers and the forked tail.

In 1918, Eugène Simon created the genus Haplophaedia and classified the copper-luster hummingbird in the new genus. In Haplophaedia , the feather pants are more inconspicuous and the plumage is duller than in Eriocnemis .

status

The black-bellied panty hummingbird , Isabella snow pant and the blue-bellied panty hummingbird are critically endangered. The turquoise-throated hummingbird is believed to be extinct. The black panties and the gold-belly wool panties are on the verge of threat due to habitat loss. The other species are not endangered.

Genera

Eriocnemis Reichenbach, 1849

Twelve species belong to this genus, of which the Isabella snow pant was only discovered in 2005.

In the past, the controversial species Eriocnecmis söderströmi and Eriocnemis isaacsoni were also classified in this genus. Both species are only known from a single specimen. In E. söderströmi it might be to the female of either E. godini or a hybrid of E. luciani and E. nigrivestris act. Today these two species are apparently considered invalid and no longer appear in the official taxonomic lists.
