Harald Birkenkamp (born March 17, 1950 in Mettmann ) is a German politician.He was Mayor of Ratingen from October 14, 2004 to May 31, 2014 .

Life and career

After training at the city council Mettmann to graduate in business administration (FH) and different activities in the financial department, he was in 1977 head of the finance department . In 1989 he became alderman and treasurer of the city of Hilden . On August 1, 1996 he was elected to the same position with the city of Ratingen .

He was a member of the CDU from 1986 to 2003 before he joined the newly founded Citizens' Union Ratingen in 2004 and became its candidate for direct election for mayor .

In the local elections in 2004 he prevailed on October 10, 2004 in the second ballot with 57.0% of the votes against the candidate of the CDU and incumbent Mayor of Ratinger Wolfgang Diedrich. Since October 14, 2004 he has been the full-time mayor of Ratingen . In the local elections in 2009 he was confirmed in office with 57.0% of the votes. His successor was Klaus Konrad Pesch, a joint candidate for the CDU, SPD, FDP and the Greens.

He was a member of the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Ratingen , the administrative board of Sparkasse Hilden-Ratingen-Velbert and chairman of the supervisory board of Ratingen Marketing GmbH . At the same time, he was a member of various committees of the GVV municipal insurance and of the Association of Cities and Towns in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Birkenkamp is married and has a daughter.
