The founder of Daoism , Laozi (Lao-tse), whose family name was Lǐ, went down in history as the first Li in the 6th century BC.
History and spread of the name
In the Tang Dynasty (7th-9th centuries), Li was the family name of the imperial family. Since the emperor's relatives were given preferential treatment at all times, the name Li was able to spread more and more.
In the course of the history of China, other peoples have been incorporated into the Han again and again . Many relatives chose Han Chinese names in an attempt to adapt to the new situation. Li was a popular name for those belonging to other ethnic groups who wanted to choose a simple but very Chinese name. Since the surname was always inherited through the father, a large number of all Han Chinese with the surname Li are related to one another.
