from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Li Jae-sik (born June 30, 1962 ) is a former North Korean wrestler . He became world champion in free style light flyweight in 1986 and 1987 .

Career

Li Jae-sik started for the North Korean club Csang Se Hong . Not much is known about his career, as little information was leaked from North Korea. North Korean wrestlers only took part sporadically in international tournaments or championships during the times when Li Jae-sik was active. In 1984 and 1985, North Korean wrestlers took part in the Werner Seelenbinder Tournament in Leipzig , but Li Jae-sik was not one of the North Korean teams that started there. The 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and 1988 in Seoul, as well as the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, in which Li Jae-sik could have participated, were boycotted by North Korea.

On January 23, 1986 Li Jae-sik won the free style title in the weight class up to 48 kg body weight at an international tournament in Soviet Minsk . In October 1986, Li Jae-sik was a participant in the World Championships in Budapest . In a gripping fight against the 26-year-old László Bíró , the greatest Hungarian medal hope in free style, he won the light flyweight title there.

A year later he repeated this success at the 1987 World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand . There he won ahead of Lee Sang-ho , South Korea , Sergei Karamtschakow , Soviet Union, Reiner Heugabel , West Germany and Timothy Vanni , USA . In 1987 he also won an international tournament in Tbilisi ahead of Sergei Karamtschakow.
