Harald Stenger (born February 13, 1951 in Frankfurt-Bornheim , Hessen ) is a German sports journalist and former press spokesman for the German Football Association .

Career

Stenger began his journalistic career during his school days as a freelancer in the sports department of the Frankfurter Rundschau . He reported more than three decades for this, since 1990 as "football boss". Above all, he took care of the national team, but also Bundesliga and European Cup games. In addition, he was involved in youth work on a voluntary basis for over twenty years.

After the former head of media, Wolfgang Niersbach, was appointed executive vice-president and press chief of the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup , Stenger succeeded him on July 1, 2001. Originally he was director of communication and thus responsible for all public relations at the DFB. In 2010, his area of expertise was limited to the German senior national team and press work at the 2010 World Cup. The 2010 Soccer World Cup was the ninth World Cup that Stenger accompanied and his third as an employee of the DFB. After that, he was active as the national team's press spokesman until the 2012 European Championship . His contract, which expired on August 31, 2012, was not extended by the DFB. In October 2013 Stenger received the Herbert Award . Stenger received the media award, which is reminiscent of Herbert Zimmermann , the legendary reporter of the 1954 World Cup final, in the lifetime achievement category for his work as press spokesman for the national team and DFB media director.

Because of the daily press conferences of the national team at tournaments he was often referred to by press representatives as "Daily Stenger" or "Daily Harry".

From 1998 to 2001, Stenger was chairman of the Schlappekicker campaign of the Frankfurter Rundschau , which supports athletes or sports clubs and initiatives that are particularly socially involved in need through no fault of their own. Since April 2017, Stenger has been a member of the Schlappekicker board and deputy chairman again.
