Hardwickia binata is a tree in the legume family from the carob subfamily. It occurs in India to Pakistan . It is the only species in the Hardwickia genus.

The species is sometimes confused with Prioria pinnata (Roxb. Ex DC.) Breteler , also known as Kingiodendron pinnatum (Roxb. Ex DC.) Harms , which also comes from India, because a synonym for the species is Hardwickia pinnata Roxb. ex DC.

description

Hardwickia binata grows as a deciduous tree with hanging branches up to 25–30 meters or a little more high. The trunk diameter can reach up to 1 meter or more. The dark brown-gray bark is thick and roughly furrowed to cracked cubes. The tree carries a balm .

The stalked and alternate, leathery, almost bare leaves are twofold. The petiole is 1.5–2 inches long and has a small bristle between the leaflets at the end . The oblique-egg-shaped to trapezoidal leaflets are sessile and have entire margins, and 3.5–7 inches long and 2.5–4 inches wide. They are trimmed at the uneven base and rounded at the tip, the veins are palmate with curved veins. The small stipules are sloping.

Axillary or terminal, loose and delicate panicles are formed. The stalked, five-fold flowers are greenish-yellow with a simple flower envelope , the petals are missing. There are 5 petaloid, boat-shaped and spreading sepals. The 10 unequally long (5 are shorter) and free stamens have thin and threadlike stamens with large, spherical anthers. The elongated ovary is upper constant with a longer stylus with broad, disk-shaped and capitate stigma .

Solitary and winged, flat, about 4.5–8 inches long, 1.2–1.7 inches wide, red-brown, bald and finely veined, narrow-lanceolate wingnuts ( legumes ) are formed. The flat and egg-shaped, furrowed, light brownish seeds at the tip of the fruit are 1.5–2 inches long. The fruits only open at the bottom.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Taxonomy

The first description of the genus Hardwickia and the species Hardwickia binata was in 1819 by William Roxburgh in Pl. Coromandel 3: 6, pl. 209. Hardwickia trapeziformis Graham is a synonym .

use

A fiber can be obtained from the bark .

The Harwickiabalsam is similar to Kopaivabalsam .

The durable wood is quite hard and heavy, it is known as anjan .
