action

Hubert Davis interviews his mother, his half-brother, his father's new wife and Mel Davis himself about his life story.

As a colored man, Mel Davis fell in love with Hubert Davis' light-skinned mother, Megan, in the 1960s. The intercultural relationship stood in stark contrast to the racism that shaped the time in the USA, which is why marriage was out of the question. Mel Davis eventually married the also dark-skinned Mary Etta, with whom he fathered Hubert Davis' older half-brother Mawuli.

Awards

There was a nomination for Hardwood in the Best Documentary Short Film category at the 2005 Academy Awards .

In 2006, Hardwood was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cultural & Artistic Programming after being shown on POV on PBS .
