Hariton Tiktin (* 9. August 1850 in Breslau , † 13. March 1936 in Berlin ) was a German-Romanian linguist , Rumänist , grammarian and lexicographer .

life and work

Heimann Tiktin grew up in a rabbi family in Breslau . In 1869 he went to Iași in Romania, got married there and became a Romanian citizen. He studied at the University of Leipzig (with young grammarians ) and received his doctorate in 1884 with studies in Romanian philology (2 vols., Leipzig 1884; vol. 2: Influence of ú and j on neighboring sounds ). In Iași, he was a grammar school teacher for Latin and German, but especially with important grammatical and lexicographical works on Romanian.

Heimann Tiktin converted to Christianity in 1900 and took the first name Hariton . From 1912 to 1925 he was lecturer for Romanian at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he taught not only language practice but also historical grammar of Romanian and the history of Romanian language. In 1919 he was appointed an honorary member of the Romanian Academy .

Tiktin was the grandfather of the painter Lola Schmierer Roth (1893–1981).
