The commercial building is in a central location in the city center in Rheydt, between Hauptstrasse and Marktstrasse.

architecture

Only at second glance does it become apparent that the three-storey, flat-roofed building is essentially an old building - probably from the Wilhelminian era. But then it is noticeable that the old facade , which lies like a backdrop behind the presented construction, is inclined to the otherwise straight line of flight of the post-war period. It is also a regular perforated facade, purged of all ornaments and structures, in conventional masonry-plaster construction with regular, high-rectangular windows.

The initially seemingly unmotivated jump to the slightly protruding left axis on the upper floors goes back to the former bay window of the old building. The “balcony construction” presented along the entire wall is remarkable. A total of six thick-walled iron pipes with a diameter of 15 cm, enlarged at the top with support plates like a capital, support the projecting, flat roof . The thin supports appear extremely delicate and light. The roof end and the imaginary line of the supports follow the new street alignment in a straight line, so that the asymmetry behind it is typical of the 1950s to the sloping wall behind .

Windows and upper storey doors of the facade have been renewed, but the decorative house entrance door of the reconstruction is still preserved on the ground floor, which also has the recurring diamond pattern of the building group discussed here. The renovation of the ground floor (installation of a shop window between the pillars, thus closing the free space); since the supports were substantially but not removed, this change is assessed as not decisive in the weighing of the issues.

The front of the commercial building Harmoniestraße 1 is an integral part of the row Hauptstraße 30, Harmoniestraße 1 and Harmoniestraße 3, which formerly belonged together as the residential and commercial building Wallraf. It is one of those well-preserved, relatively similarly designed facades in this area (also opposite Hauptstraße 26) that go back directly to the construction planning of Alfons Leitl's staff and also convey this vividly. As far as we know today, the established monument value relates to the substance and appearance of the street-side facade including the original front door .

The office building at Harmoniestraße 1 is important for Rheydt, City of Mönchengladbach. There is a public interest in its preservation and use for scientific, architectural, historical and urban planning reasons. It is therefore a monument according to § 2 DSchG NRW .
