Harnack Medal

The Harnack Medal is an award given by the Max Planck Society .

The medal was donated in 1924 as a medal for services to the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (KWG), the predecessor organization of the Max Planck Society, and was awarded between 1925 and 1936; In 1953 the tradition was resumed by the Max Planck Society (MPG). The medal is the highest distinction of the MPG, which is bestowed for special services to the Max Planck Society.

The award is made by the President based on a Senate resolution of the Max Planck Society.

It is named after Adolf von Harnack , founding president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science , founded in 1911 .
