Harold B. Mattingly

Harold B (raithwaite) Mattingly (born August 13, 1923 in Finchley , † August 23, 2015 in Truro ) was a British ancient historian and numismatist .

The son of the British Museum numismatist Harold Mattingly studied at Cambridge University , where he took his bachelor's degree in 1947/48 and his master's degree in 1952. From 1950 to 1970 he was first lecturer and from 1955 reader for ancient history at the University of Nottingham . In 1970 Mattingly became a professor at Leeds University . He had been retired since 1987.

Mattingly dealt with various topics in Greek (especially Athenian) and Roman history. Like his father, he also dealt intensively with ancient numismatics. He was a member of the Council of the Royal Numismatic Society from 1960 to 1964 and from 1968 to 1972 .
