Harold Hartley (chemist)

Sir Harold Hartley (born September 3, 1878 , † September 9, 1972 ) was a British physical chemist . He moved from academia to business and industry, including as chairman of the British Overseas Airways Corporation .

Life

Hartley was the only child of the collector Harold T. Hartley (1851-1943). His mother died in 1884 when he was a young child. Hartley studied at Dulwich College , Balliol College and Oxford . There he completed his studies in chemistry and mineralogy in 1900 with distinction.

Act

After the Second World War Hartley taught again at Balliol College and was a director of the attached Gas Light and Coke Company , later the North Thames Gas Board , where he served on the board until 1946. In his scientific work he dealt with the electrochemistry of non-aqueous solutions and the self-crystallization of solutions and gas reactions, for which he was accepted into the Royal Society .

After university life, he moved into business in 1930 and took over as Vice President of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway as head of the research department. He was also appointed chairman of the British rubber producers' research center, president of the Institute for Glass Enamelling and president of the British Gas Industry Society. In 1937 Sir Harold Hartley was awarded the Wilhelm Exner Medal .

By 1949, Hartley took over as a director of the British Overseas Airways Corporation . Until the early 1960s he was, among other things, President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers , Chairman of the European Economic Cooperation and the Society of Instrument Technology .
