Harold Marvin Shaw (born November 3, 1877 in Brownsville , Tennessee , † January 30, 1926 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor , film director and screenwriter of the silent film era.

Life

Harold M. Shaw began his career at the age of 16 in the San Francisco theater . From 1909 he also appeared in numerous silent films by the Edison Manufacturing Company under directors such as J. Searle Dawley , Edwin S. Porter , Bannister Merwin , Oscar Apfel , Ashley Miller and Charles Brabin .

From 1912 onwards he worked as a director for the Edison Manufacturing Company, including The Land Beyond the Sunset (1912). He then worked briefly for the Independent Moving Pictures Company . In the middle of 1913 he moved with George Loane Tucker to the London Film Company in England , where over 30 films were made under his direction. His most successful productions from this creative phase include The House of Temperley (1913), a film adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's historical novel Rodney Stone , and Trilby (1914), an adaptation of the novel of the same name by George du Maurier . The recruiting film You (1916) was made during the First World War .

After the London Film Company got into financial difficulties, Shaw signed a contract with the South African entrepreneur IW Schlesinger for his studio African Film Productions in 1916 . The first project from this collaboration was the historical film De Voortrekkers (1916), which told the story of the Great Trek of the Boers and the Battle of the Blood River . It is considered the oldest surviving feature film from South African production.

The next film project was initially planned to be Symbol of Sacrifice , but after a dispute between Shaw and Schlesinger, Dick Cruikshanks took over the direction of the film. Shaw made the films The Rose of Rhodesia (1918) and Thoroughbreds All (1919) in South Africa before returning to Great Britain.

In 1920 he shot the melodrama Land of Mystery in the Soviet Union , which was very loosely based on Lenin's life . Over the next few years, adaptations of works by the writer HG Wells were made with Kipps (1921) and The Wheels of Chance (1922) , among others .

Shaw moved to the United States in 1922, where he made a few films for Metro Pictures Corporation before retiring from filmmaking. On January 30, 1926, he died in a traffic accident in Los Angeles.

Edna Flugrath , whom he had met in 1911 and with whom he was married from 1916 until his death, appeared in many of his films .

Few of his films survived.
